Winter lawn care in Perth: keeping your lawn alive until spring

Your lawn is barely growing right now, so it doesn't need a weekly cut. Every two to three weeks is plenty for most Perth lawns in winter.

The one change that matters is height. Lift your mowing height a notch or two through winter. Longer leaf means more surface area to catch the limited winter sun, and that's what keeps the plant ticking over. Scalping a lawn in July is one of the fastest ways to walk into spring with bare patches.

Perth's sandy soil drains fast, but plenty of yards south of the river have spots where water sits after a week of rain. Low corners, shaded side strips, the run-off line under the eaves. Grass roots need air as much as water, and turf that sits in soggy soil for weeks starts to rot and thin out.

You can't change the weather, but you can help the soil breathe:

• Keep traffic off soaked areas. Winter is when the kids' goal square and the path to the washing line turn into mud tracks.
• If water pools in the same spots every year, the soil underneath is compacted. That's a job for core aeration, which punches thousands of small holes so water moves down instead of sitting on top.
• Rake up leaves and lawn debris. A wet mat of leaves smothers the grass under it in a couple of weeks.

Moss loves exactly what a Perth winter provides, damp soil and weak light. If you're seeing green fuzz along the shaded southern side of the house or under trees, that's the signal the lawn is losing the fight in those spots.

The honest fix isn't a magic product. It's changing the conditions. Prune back overhanging growth so more light reaches the turf, reduce watering in those zones (winter rain usually covers it), and improve drainage so the surface dries out between fronts. A thick, healthy lawn shades out moss the same way it crowds out weeds.

Warm-season grasses can't use a big feed in the middle of winter. Most of it washes straight through the sand and into the drains. If your lawn is looking hungry, a light application of a slow-release fertiliser is the ceiling. The real feeding window opens when soil temperatures lift in spring.
