Couch, buffalo or kikuyu? Choosing the right lawn for Perth

Couch has the finest leaf of the three, and it's the one people picture when they imagine a tight, striped, bowling-green finish. It loves full sun, handles close mowing better than anything else you can grow in Perth, and stands up to plenty of wear because it spreads by runners and knits itself back together.

The trade-offs are real, though. Couch is the first to brown off when soil temperatures drop, so expect a dormant, straw-coloured look through the depths of winter. It's also the biggest commitment of the three. To look its best it wants frequent mowing in season, steady feeding and a level surface. An annual lawn top dressing earns its keep here, smoothing out dips and thickening growth so you can mow low without scalping.

Pick couch if full sun, a sharp eye and a bit of routine sound like you. Done properly, it's a lawn worth showing off.

Buffalo is the broad, soft-leafed one, and modern varieties are a long way from the scratchy stuff older Perth yards grew up with. Its big advantage is shade tolerance, the best of the three by a clear margin. If sections of your lawn sit in the shadow of the house, a fence or established trees for half the day, buffalo will hang on where couch and kikuyu thin out.

It also holds its winter colour better than the other two, which matters if a brown July lawn would quietly drive you mad. The leaf stays soft underfoot all year, so it suits family yards where the kids spend more time on the grass than the paving.

The thing to watch is thatch. Buffalo builds a spongy layer of old growth if it's over-fed, so it rewards measured feeding and the occasional dethatch rather than constant pushing.

Kikuyu is the sprinter. It's the fastest growing of the three, it repairs itself quickly, and it cops the most punishment without complaint. Dogs doing laps, backyard sport, daily foot traffic, kikuyu takes it all and grows straight back.

That vigour cuts both ways. Kikuyu will happily invade garden beds, paths and anywhere else it can reach unless the edges are kept firm and regular. It's also hungry for sun, and in shade it turns thin and leggy fast. Give it open sky and room to run and it's arguably the easiest lawn in Perth to keep alive. Keeping it contained is the real job.

Before you fall for a variety, spend a full day watching your yard and be honest about four things:

• Sun. Note which areas get direct sun for most of the day and which sit in shade. Full sun suits all three. Part shade points straight to buffalo.
• Wear. Kids, dogs and daily traffic favour kikuyu for sheer recovery speed, with couch a solid second.
• Winter colour. If year-round green matters most, buffalo is your safest pick. If a dormant winter look doesn't bother you, couch stays on the table.
• Upkeep. Couch rewards attention and punishes neglect. Buffalo and kikuyu are far more forgiving when life gets busy.

Whichever way you land, timing and groundwork decide how well new turf takes. Warm-season grasses root fastest into warm soil, so the sweet spot for laying runs from spring through early autumn. Turf laid then knits down in weeks instead of limping through months.

Preparation matters even more than timing. A new lawn is only as good as what's underneath it: a properly levelled base, improved soil that actually holds moisture and nutrients in our sand, and clean, defined edges that keep the lawn where it belongs.
